We've all seen the Next Gen Stats as part of NFL broadcasts -- player speed, distance traveled, etc. -- but this story on NFL.com is the first time I've seen anything really useful done with the data. For each pass thrown in the NFL, they've calculated the likelihood of a completion based on six factors:

  • Air distance, the actual distance between the passer and receiver, both horizontally and vertically.
  • Target separation, the distance between the receiver and the nearest defender in coverage.

Interesting article where ESPN Chalk asked the Westgate how much each starting quarterback would be worth to the line if he were injured. Aaron Rodgers is the most, at 10 points. Some of the interesting results: I'm surprised how low the Saints are here, as much as I love Teddy Bridgewater. I just figure Drew Brees is worth more than just 2 points. I also wonder what they would have said about the difference between Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston if they had been asked two weeks ago instead of right now.

Johnny Manziel may no longer play in the NFL, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t take a page out of one particular team’s playbook. That’s exactly what he did during Friday’s game against the Blue Bombers, when the Alouettes quarterback ran a similar version of the play that helped the Eagles win Super Bowl 52.The Alouettes were trailing 21-6 at the time, in need of a big play to move the chains. That’s when Manziel and Co. busted out their own version of the “Philly Special,” and it worked. Manziel received the snap and handed the ball off to wide receiver Eugene Lewis, who was in motion across the formation. Lewis then tossed the ball to Manziel, who caught it and ran, for a gain of over 20 yards. Manziel showed he’s still got some tricks up his sleeve on that play, which worked to perfection.

Marcus Mariota‘s injury remains a mystery. It hasn’t been disclosed exactly what he’s dealing with although it has reportedly caused him to lose some feeling in his hand. If Mariota can’t go it would be a huge blow for Tennessee against the league’s top defense. The NFL did not include the infamous Clay Matthews hit on their post-Week 2 officiating video, contrary to their reported plans, according to a report.ESPN Green Bay Packers reporter Jason Wilde said on Twitter Friday night that he watched the NFL’s video shared with officials this week, and the hit was not on it. Matthews’ hit on Kirk Cousins late in Sunday’s tie between the Vikings and Packers was one of the biggest controversies of the weekend. Matthews was called for roughing the passer for what most felt was a textbook hit on Cousins. The penalty negated an interception that likely would have sealed the Packers’ win.A day after the call, both ESPN and The Washington Post reported that the NFL agreed with the call and planned to include it in their video to the officials about what constitutes roughing the passer.Did they change their mind? Have they reversed course on their enforcement of the penalty? Or have they finally realized that Matthews’ hit did not really constitute “...

For the first time since December 2016, the Cleveland Browns won a football game. After going down 14-0 against the New York Jets, Baker Mayfield made his NFL debut. And by the end of the night, the Browns walked away with a 21-17 victory. But that’s not all. According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, interest in tickets is sky high at the moment.“I couldn’t believe it,” Cleveland ticket broker Mark Klang of Amazing Tickets said to Rovell. “It was like what it was the night Johnny [Manziel] got drafted…”Okay, but just wait for it…“…Except then, it went on for 30 minutes. This was still going two hours after the game ended. And not just for the next home game. For all games.”Surprising? Maybe not. But staggering? Absolutely. Josh Gordon now plays for the New England Patriots. That means his coach is Bill Belichick and his quarterback is Tom Brady. In other words, now he’s with a duo that has five Super Bowls together. They’re 1-1 as they approach a winnable matchup against the Detroit Lions. That said, is Gordon going to play? Well, that’s another matter entirely. Thursday night, Baker Mayfield made his NFL debut. And on that very same night, the Cleveland Browns won a football game. But this wasn’t just any win. In fact, it was their first win since December 2016. And folks took notice. According to Yahoo’s Frank Schwab, NFL Network’s ratings saw a huge boost during the contest.“The NFL announced that the ratings for the Browns’ thrilling win over the New York Jets were the highest for NFL Network in three years. That’s juking the stats a little bit, since the NFL has shifted many Thursday night games to network television. But 8.6 million viewers is still a 41 percent bump from the seven games last season that were exclusively on NFL Network” the report reads. In his debut, Mayfield lit it up — he went 17-of-23 (73.9%) or 201 yards and zero turnovers. He took just one sack for a loss of eight yards. And after bringing the score within 14-12, he and Jarvis Landry did this. So go on, Cleveland. Keep doing this and who knows — you might single...

The New England Patriots’ lackluster start to the 2018 season is not sitting too well with Tom Terrific.Michael Giardi of NFL Network reported on Friday that multiple Patriots players told him star quarterback Tom Brady was “irritated” this week due to the team’s poor execution in their Week 2 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Pats put up just 302 yards of total offense against the Jags, falling by the final of 31-20. After the game, Brady made some critical remarks to the media about his team’s play. While wide receiver Julian Edelman, one of Brady’s top targets, is suspended for the first four games of the season, it still hasn’t been the start that the Pats had envisioned. Torrey Smith had some serious issues with the fine he incurred for unnecessary roughness committed in Week 2.NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Smith had been fined just over $10,000 for unnecessary roughness for a retaliatory hit in the Carolina Panthers’ loss to the Atlanta Falcons.Fines are often announced on Friday, and Smith said he hadn’t heard about it, leading him to think he had escaped the financial penalty. Rapoport’s report proved him otherwise. More importantly, Smith was miffed about his fine being the same amount Damontae Kazee’s. Kazee initiated with a dirty hit on Cam Newton, against which Smith retaliated. Smith further said that if the hit were against a quarterback other than Cam Newton, the fine for Kazee would have been much higher. You know that Cam’s father won’t disagree with Smith on this one.
