AB Says No Football Without Old Helmet
Aaron Schatz
09 Aug 2019, 04:39pm

Antonio Brown has reportedly told the Raiders that unless he can wear his old helmet, he will not play football again. Brown was one of a handful of players whose preferred helmets were banned by the league this offseason. (Tom Brady also has this problem.) I'm not sure why he's taking it out on the Raiders when it's a league rule. But this is kind of nuts. The league isn't going to overturn a player safety rule for just Antonio Brown, a guy who doesn't even know that if you're going to sit in a...

Here's a look at how fans, media and NFL players reacted to the Seahawks 25-19 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.

1 hour 4 min

Let's take a look at the best highlights from Seattle at Minnesota.

2 hours 4 min

Paxton Lynch exited Sunday night’s preseason game between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings after taking a massive helmet-to-helmet hit from Holton Hill. Lynch decided to tuck and run on a run-pass option play with around four minutes remaining in the game. As he went to slide, Hill came in head-first and nailed him in the helmet. Hill was ejected for the hit, while Lynch left the field for a medical examination. Former Ohio State quarterback JT Barrett entered the game in Lynch’s place. Lynch was 6/15 for 67 yards prior to his exit. He is competing with Geno Smith for the Seahawks’ backup quarterback job behind Russell Wilson. Lynch was waived by the Broncos before the start of last season, just two years after they made him a first-round pick.

3 hours 15 min

Teddy Bridgewater started the New Orleans Saints’ second preseason game Sunday and turned in a very discouraging performance that his coach is taking the blame for. Bridgewater went just 5-of-12 for 40 yards and an interception in a 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, with backup Taysom Hill rallying New Orleans to a win. Coach Sean Payton, however, took the blame, stating Bridgewater was sick and probably shouldn’t have stayed in as long as he did. Bridgewater won’t see much of the field in 2018 unless something disastrous happens to Drew Brees. However, for a guy who was pursued as a potential starter during the offseason, seeing him off that much was jarring. At least there’s a decent explanation.

3 hours 22 min

Sunday’s slate of preseason NFL action consisted of just two games. It started with the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers doing battle in Southern California. Neither future Hall of Fame starting quarterback suited up in that game. Instead, backups Teddy Bridgewater and Tyrod Taylor struggled big time. The evening matchup pitted the Seattle Seahawks against the Minnesota Vikings in the Twin Cities. That game saw both Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins play well in limited action. Though, lesser-known players also stood out Sunday. Chargers running back Justin Jackson performed well in holdout Melvin Gordon’s stead. Meanwhile, the young Saints secondary looks to be a juggernaut. These are among the biggest takeaways from Sunday’s limited slate of NFL football. Who is Marcus Mariota? Is he a dynamic talent capable of lifting a franchise to the next level? Or is he merely a serviceable game manager with a limited ceiling? These are the questions the Tennessee Titans must answer in 2019. QBs WITH BIG QUESTIONS  Is Cowboys' Dak Prescott worth massive deal? Is Bucs' Jameis Winston a franchise QB? Can Titans' Marcus Mariota make leap to elite? Mariota had a sparkling debut season in 2015, posting a passer rating of 91.5 that ranked as third best ever by a rookie (minimum 300 pass attempts). He followed that with an even better second season, throwing for 26 touchdowns (and only nine interceptions) and recording a passer rating of 96.5 (10th best that season). Curiously, Mariota failed to build on his early success, as his production dipped in his third and fourth seasons. Both Browns kickers — incumbent Greg Joseph and fifth-round rookie Austin Seibert — missed their only field goal tries Saturday night. Although each came from beyond 50 yards, the Browns are now considering bringing in additional competition. Freddie Kitchens said he and John Dorsey have discussed adding another kicker to their mix, Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com notes. While it would certainly be odd for the Browns to go elsewhere after spending a mid-Day 3 pick on one of the nation’s best college kickers last season, teams are quicker to give up on kicker draft picks than they are at nearly every other position. “To me, those critical errors are just as important as the missed field goals themselves because we’ve got to put them in a better position to make them. But are they expected to make a 53-yard field goal? Yes they are,” Kitchens said, via Cabot. “Am I concerned about it? No, because we’re not playing for real yet, but I will be.” Joseph made 17 of 20 field goal...

If Antonio Brown does indeed decide to give up football at some point, his next career could be in a starring role on any day-time soap opera. That’s not hyperbole. The Oakland Raiders wide receiver continues to create drama at a scale that’s unmatched around the NFL world. The latest example of this came Sunday when Brown failed to show up to Raiders practice because he’s still upset about the NFL not allowing him to wear a specific helmet. Remember, Brown was away from Raiders training camp earlier this month for that specific reason. It led to suggestions that he might retire. While Brown did eventually report to camp, he was not in attendance on Sunday. It led to a visibly upset demeanor from Raiders general manager Mike Mayock, who pretty much offered up an ultimatum to Brown. Needless to say, the football world had its reactions to this latest Brown drama. Here are some of the best:

8 hours 44 min

Antonio Brown was not at practice Sunday, missing the team’s final training camp practice of the summer, and he skipped out over his helmet. The league closed a loophole on Saturday to ensure that Brown cannot wear his preferred helmet, even if it was less than 10 years old. On Sunday, Brown skipped out on practice, drawing some stern words from general manager Mike Mayock. This is not the way the Raiders were hoping any of this would play out. Following his freak foot injury due to cyrotherapy, Brown left camp amid a grievance filed against the NFL over his helmet. After losing that battle, he arrived back at camp, his agent in tow, and said he’d be getting back to business. Then, this happened. The drama never seems to end when Antonio Brown is involved.

9 hours 10 min

Antonio Brown missed another Raiders practice on Sunday. While Brown is still dealing with feet issues, Mike Mayock confirmed this latest absence was related to his helmet. The Raiders’ supportive tone has shifted. “He’s upset about the helmet issue. We have supported that; we appreciate that,” Mayock said, via Vic Tafur of The Athletic (video link). “At this point, we’ve pretty much exhausted all avenues of relief. From our perspective, it’s time for him to be all-in or all-out.” The first-year GM reiterated hope Brown will be a major part of this new Raider regime’s attempt at a bounce-back season, but the team is clearly frustrated with its trade acquisition’s recent antics. An arbitrator ruled in favor of the NFL regarding Brown’s helmet grievance, and despite the four-time All-Pro finding a slightly newer model of his since-discontinued helmet, he’s been informed it failed an NOCSAE test. Mayock’s comments run counter to Jon Gruden’s last weekend. Oakland’s HC expressed...

Emergency officials in Austin, Texas, told the American-Statesman that they are investigating a crash that killed Benson and a passenger. Two other people were injured in the accident and suffered non-fatal injuries.
