Good article here by Jonathan Jones on MMQB. You can instantly move into the broadcast booth if you're a Pro Bowl-quality player such as Jason Witten. But how do lower-level players move into today's diverse media landscape. Jones talks to Geoff Schwartz, Andrew Hawkins, Dan Orlovsky, and others. Some good football analysts here. There's a lot more to being a media personality than just knowing the subject, and there's no reason why great players should be better broadcasters than guys who were average starters or even bench players such as Orlovsky. Just ask Mike Mayock and Matt Bowen.

We learned earlier tonight that the NFL was planning on suspending
Jameis Winston, and the Buccaneers quarterback wasn’t going to appeal. Why wouldn’t he exercise his appeal rights? Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com believes Winston and the NFL have already cut a deal. There’s a benefit for both sides. The NFL could have threatened Winston with a six-game ban, and the quarterback managed to get that chopped in half. By avoiding an appeal, the NFL could also avoid a lengthy, “futile” appeal process. As Florio points out, this ordeal could also “expose yet another Park Avenue Keystone Cops investigation and/or kangaroo court process.”After having learned from the Tom Brady and Ezekiel Elliott appeals, the writer ultimately surmises that the NFL didn’t want to deal with the impending “P.R. crisis” that would surely accompany the process. There have been some more important notes regarding Winston’s suspension. We’ve compiled those below…
While it was originally reported...

News broke late Wednesday evening that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Jameis Winston were concerned about a looming suspension. It now looks like that’s going to be the case. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL is planning on suspending the quarterback the first three games of the 2018 season for violating its personal conduct policy. “The league still has not notified Winston of its official decision, and the circumstances surrounding it still could lead to an increase or decrease of the three games, per sources. But as it stands now, the league is preparing to suspend Winston for three games,” Schefter noted. This comes following a March 2016 incident in which Winston allegedly groped an Uber driver. The incident itself wasn’t reported until November of last year.If Winston is indeed suspended three games, veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will be under center to open the season for Tampa Bay.

Johnny Manziel earned celebrity status while in college, which was great for his fame but bad for questions about his status as an amateur. After all, some wondered how a college student could afford to do all the things the Heisman Trophy winner was doing, such as traveling from city to city and taking in major entertainment events. On his “ComebackSzn” podcast on Barstool Sports, Manziel says the NCAA was harassing him every time he was seen at an event, tracking all his moves. He says they would ask for invoices to show how he paid for things because they apparently were concerned that he was receiving money under the table. The former Texas A&M quarterback says he worked around all that by paying for things in cash. This isn’t the first time Manziel has talked about his issues with the NCAA.“They tried to end me. They tried to really ruin my college career. If it wasn’t for my family and being able to hire a really good attorney, do what I need to do, the NCAA,” Manziel said...

The NFL is planning to suspend Jameis Winston three games for a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy, according to a report.ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the news on the impending Winston suspension. This report by Schefter comes a day after ESPN Tallahassee host Jeff Cameron reported that Winston was preparing to be suspended by the NFL. He had said that the suspension would be for failing to let them know about a 2016 incident with an Uber driver in Arizona.Last year, a woman claimed she was groped by Winston while driving him in March 2016. There have been conflicting stories since the circumstances surrounding the story. Even if Winston was not charged, the NFL has the power to suspend the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback on grounds of violating the personal conduct policy.

As a former fourth-round pick who is still on his rookie contract, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has one of the most team-friendly deals in the NFL. He has taken notice of the big money deals given to Matt Ryan ($30MM/year), Jimmy Garoppolo ($27.5MM/year) and Matthew Stafford ($27MM/year), but he says he’s staying patient at the same time.“I know if I play well, they’ll take care of me,” said Prescott on SiriusXM (via the Dallas News). “It’s just part of it. All these guys out here getting these contracts, they’re getting them deservedly so because of the way that they’ve been playing. My [focus] this year is just winning games. That’s my main goal. That’s really my only goal, not any individual success or numbers or worry about the contract. It’s about going in and winning enough games to get us to the playoffs and then winning one game at a time at that point. The rest of the stuff will come.”Prescott is entering the third year of a four-year rookie contract that pays him $...

Baker Mayfield had the opportunity on Thursday to directly confront Colin Cowherd over a barrage of criticism the FS1 personality has been sending his way for some time. While there were several intriguing exchanges between Mayfield and Cowherd during the interview, one in particular allowed Mayfield to put Cowherd in his place over the frequent barbs. Sporting a shirt that bore the word “Undraftable” — a reference to what Cowherd once deemed him — Mayfield took the host to task over insinuating he was a bad teammate. The crux of Cowherd’s argument involved the Oklahoma Sooners’ 31-16 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes last year, specifically involving Mayfield running over to the student section to celebrate after a touchdown. Here’s the exchange. “Our band was over there. Our student section’s right there and then (I went) straight back to our sideline,” Mayfield said, as transcribed by Shutdown Corner. “Did you watch the rest of the game? You did? Last month, the NFL changed its rules regarding the national anthem, allowing players who choose to not stand to remain in the locker room. So far, the new policy has not been well-received, and this week a group of civil rights organizations asked the NFL to eliminate the new rule.“This policy represses peaceful, non-disruptive protest of police violence against unarmed African Americans and other people of color,” the various groups wrote (via USA Today). “It is disappointing that a league built on grit and competition lacks the constitution to stomach a call for basic equality and fairness.”The groups want to meet with Roger Goodell to discuss the situation, but it’s not clear whether he’ll take them up on their offer, or if the league is willing to change course on its decision. Here’s more from around the NFL:

14 hours 30 min

Given what Rob Gronkowski brings to the field, he could make a legitimate case that he has transcended the tight end position and should be compared to the game’s best pass catchers, CBSSports.com’s Joel Corry writes. A deal like that is out of the question given that Antonio Brown paces wide receivers with a $17MM/year deal, but it’s still food for thought as Gronk pushes for a revised contract.Right now, Jimmy Graham is the league’s only $10MM/year tight end, and Gronkowski can certainly make a case to earn more than him. If Gronk wants to weigh himself against wide receivers, his camp can point to the top of the second tier of the WR market, which is in the $13MM/range with roughly $25-$30MM in guarantees.Of course, the Pats still hold the cards, as Gronk remains under contract through 2019 with base salaries of $8MM and $9MM in each of the next two seasons. Unless he wants to start up the retirement talk again, or try to force his way out via trade, it seems unlikely that his...

On Wednesday evening, a rumor emerged that Jameis Winston and his camp were bracing for a multiple-game suspension stemming from allegations he improperly touched a female Uber driver. The source for this rumor is ESPN Radio host Jeff Cameron, who has had past dealings with Winston and his camp. Explaining why he is bracing for a suspension, Cameron said, Winston will be suspended due to “a failure to report.”One person who absolutely does not buy this is respected Tampa Bay Buccaneers insider Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. On Thursday morning, he took to Twitter in an effort to explain why he doesn’t believe the NFL will levy a multiple-game suspension against Winston in this case. The NFL is still investigating the allegations against Winston, which you can read more about here.Winston, for what it’s worth, has staunchly denied he did anything improper.

15 hours 17 min

Last week a report broke that the Oakland Raiders were bracing for the NFL to levy a suspension against recently acquired receiver Martavis Bryant.Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal
broke the story, noting that team officials “acknowledged the club is awaiting final word on the situation. It is believed to pertain to the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.”Well, so far nothing has happened on this front. As for Bryant himself, he says he’s clean and hasn’t missed a test, per Vic Tafur of The Athletic, and the NFL hasn’t said anything to this point. If Bryant were to be suspended for violating the NFL’s substance of abuse policy, then it would almost certainly be an indefinite ban, as he was reinstated less than a year ago following a year-long suspension for the same thing. That said, until something happens on this front, it seems clear nobody should be rushing to judgment against this young man.
