The Irish Champion S., one of the premier races in the European programme, will be sponsored by the Bahrain Turf Club after Horse Racing Ireland and Leopardstown brokered a deal a month before the Group 1 was due to be run without a sponsor for the third successive season.

The race was won by St Mark's Basilica (Fr) last season and by Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2020 but hadn't been sponsored since QIPCO's stopped supporting the Group 1 prize in 2019.

However, the Bahrain Turf Club have committed to sponsoring the €1,000,000 showpiece for the next six years to the delight of Leopardstown boss Tim Husbands.

He said, “We are honoured to welcome such a prestigious and international brand, the Bahrain Turf Club, to support our flagship Flat race, the Irish Champion Stakes. To have this...

Flavien Prat is a world-class jockey, a future Hall of Famer who dominated the Southern California circuit before heading east. Yet, he entered the week tied for fourth-place in the Saratoga jockey standings, 15 wins behind the leader, Irad Ortiz, Jr. Tyler Gaffalione is the top jockey in Kentucky and is coming off a meet at Churchill Downs where he was leading rider and had 29 more wins than the runner-up. He began the week in ninth-place in the Saratoga standings.

That's no reflection on Prat or Gaffalione. What it speaks to is the depth of the current group that battles it out everyday at Saratoga. By any metric, there's not another colony in the U.S. that comes close when it comes to talent.

“It's the strongest colony in the world,” said Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who is working the meet as an analyst on America's Day at the Races, which airs on the Fox sports networks. “You can go 15 deep, maybe deeper, and if I were a trainer I wouldn't worry about which...

By this stage, they've probably had enough of being asked about that $1 mare. But the remarkable thing is that the first Thoroughbred ever acquired by Robert and Stacy Mitchell still cost more (cover fees aside) than all the others that have stocked Briland Farm, on and off the racetrack, since 2001. That was the year, having begun an inadvertent breeding career with a mare discarded by a friend of a friend, they decided to see what they could do with one that cost as much as $36,000. Her name was Rockford Peach (Great Above) and, now a venerable 31, she grazes the same pasture that nourished her granddaughter Secret Oath (Arrogate) to become a brilliant winner of the GI Kentucky Oaks.

To a degree, the fact that the Mitchells haven't bought another mare since Rockford Peach simply reflects the intimate scale of a program as hands-on as they come. The most foals they have ever delivered (always in person) in a single breeding season is six. Many years, there were only one or...

The opinion-heavy but heretofore science-light debate over whether or not certain stallions covering record numbers of mares per year will weaken the Thoroughbred breed gained a lot of clarity in late June when the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center released the findings from part one of its genetic diversity study. Tuesday, UK professor Ernie Bailey, PhD, joined the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland as the Green Group Guest of the Week to explain the major takeaways from the Gluck Center's research, what it means for the breeding industry, what comes next in the study and more.

“We now have a really great tool, we can do whole genome sequencing, we can sequence every single base, every single piece of DNA in a horse,” Bailey said. “That's really the complete assessment of diversity that one can do. The costs of doing sequencing have been dropping precipitously over the...

Hollie Doyle has paid a glowing tribute to Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) after the horse who provided her with a breakthrough Group 1 success was retired on Thursday.

The pair combined to strike in the 2020 Champions Sprint on Champions Day at Ascot. However, the 8-year-old suffered a setback in training this season, after which a decision was taken by the connections of the Archie Watson-trained speedster to bring the curtain down on his glittering career.

“He's a star and he is a horse I'll also hold very close to my heart as he gave me my first Group 1,” Doyle reflected.

“He owes nobody nothing and I'm just glad he's going to have a happy retirement. He's a horse who has performed consistently at the top level for the last two years.

“It was crazy how he went from being a good handicapper over a mile to being a Group 1 sprinter. They don't usually get quicker with age, but he...

Some of the gloss has been wiped away from Sunday's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville after Maljoom (GB) (Caravaggio) was taken out of the race due to a dirty scope.

Trained by William Haggas, Maljoom emerged as one of the most eye-catching losers of the week at Royal Ascot when flashing home for fourth in the St James's Palace S.

Maljoom had already won the German 2,000 Guineas earlier in the season and had been on course to bid for a breakthrough Group 1 triumph in France.

However, plans have been scuppered, with Haggas saying, “Unfortunately Maljoom has scoped dirty. It's a shame, but that's it.”

The Charlie Appleby-trained Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), winner of the St James's Palace and the 2000 Guineas, heads the betting for Sunday's...

The CHRB rescinded its recent ruling requiring members of the media to be licensed through the and will instead allow the standard practice of allowing tracks to provide credentials.

They released the following statement Wednesday:

“While the California Horse Racing Board values safety and security in the stable area, it also recognizes the importance of a free and independent press. After considerable feedback, rather than requiring licenses or visitors passes for stable area media access, the CHRB will allow publicity departments to issue credentials for visitor access to the stable areas. The CHRB will hold the racetracks responsible for the conduct of credentialed media they authorize for stable area access.

“The CHRB needs to know who has been authorized by racetracks to enter stable areas, so publicity departments have agreed to provide the names of those individuals. The CHRB has made it clear that the lists will not be submitted for CHRB approval. The...

MAPLE LEAF MEL (f, 2, Cross Traffic–City Gift, by City Place), named after trainer Jeremiah Englehart's assistant trainer Melanie Giddings, entered this unveiling with a reputation that preceded her, and garnered 3-5 favoritism in this state-bred affair. Quick to the front from mid-pack, the $150,000 EASMAY purchase (:10.2) set the tempo against the fence and expanded her gap at each point of call as Spinning Colors (Hard Spun) chased in vain. In much of a one-horse race from the far turn on, Maple Leaf Mel stayed clear under a hands-and-heels ride, cruising home to win by five lengths over Security Code (...

Coolmore has reached an agreement with the partnership that owns runaway Bashford Manor S. winner Gulfport (Uncle Mo–Fame and Fortune, by Unbridled's Song) to stand the undefeated 2-year-old colt at Ashford Stud upon his retirement. Gulfport is owned by L. William and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Jackpot Farm, and Whispering Oaks Farm LLC.

Bred in Kentucky by Diamond Creek Farm, Gulfport fetched $275,000 from Pick View as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling. He debuted for Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen June 10 at Churchill Downs with a scintillating seven-length score to earn 'TDN Rising Star' designation. He was even more impressive on return in the July 4...

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas thought Naughty Gal (Into Mischief) was so good in the GIII Adirondack S. Sunday that her next start ought to be in the GI Spinaway S.

Summer Promise (Uncle Mo), runner-up in the GIII Schuylerville S. on opening day was being pointed to the $300,000 seven-furlong Spinaway Sept. 4, but Lukas said Wednesday that he was reconsidering that approach.

“I've kind of changed gears after I watched Naughty Gal run the other day and win,” he said. “I might run Naughty Gal back in the Spinaway and I'm thinking maybe of shipping Summer Promise over to Monmouth and go in the Sorority.”

The $200,000 one-mile Sorority will be run Aug. 21.

Despite a wide trip through the stretch, Holy Cow Stable's Naughty Gal prevailed by 2 1/2 lengths in the 6 1/2-furlong...
