Six weeks removed from his biggest win in his career win in the GI Belmont Stakes, Dornoch (Godo Magic) did what many thought he surely wouldn't be able to repeat. But it seems nobody told him, nor the colt's connections for that matter.

During Wednesday's draw for the GI NYRABets Haskell Stakes, trainer Danny Gargan made it pretty clear that he was not really enthused with his Classic-winning colt drawing Post 1. The  trainer probably had a flashback to this season's Kentucky Derby, where Dornoch drew the dreaded rail and ran accordingly in 10th. But the Haskell is not the Derby, and drawing the rail in the Haskell likely arguably proved to be a stroke of luck given 10 prior winners have come out of that position, making it the most prolific winning position in the gate.

Following a textbook beginning, Dornoch easily strode to the front as 4-5 choice Mindframe (...

Getaway Car (c, 2, Curlin–Surrender Now, by Morning Line), named by Katie Ryan (Tom Ryan's wife) after a Taylor Swift-song, topped the charts on debut and earned a 'TDN Rising Star' at Del Mar on Saturday. Spotlighted in the Saturday edition of TDN's Racing Insights, the $700,000 Keeneland September grad sported several solid works over the past month in Arcadia for trainer Bob Baffert.

The 6-5 shot here did not disappoint his supporters as he established a healthy lead up the backstretch. Giving chase around the far turn was Todd Fincher trainee Smash It (Star Guitar), but the chestnut was unable decrease Getaway Car's margin by the top of the lane. Cruising along past the eighth pole, jockey Juan...

OCEANPORT, NJ-On paper, it appeared that a single horse, Idiomatic (Curlin), couldn't be beaten. That was until they ran Monmouth Park's GIII Molly Pitcher Stakes. Sent off the searing 1-9 choice in the scratched reduced field of five, the 2023 champion older mare stumbled a hair coming out of stall 6 as Kathleen O (Upstart) faced a much more dramatic misstep exiting the gate. While the latter was rushed into contention along the inside, the champion cruised effortlessly to the lead, doling out an opening quarter in a poky :25.57. Carving out an equally laughable half in :50.27 with Miles of Smiles (Prospective) and Kathleen O in pursuit. As if caught by surprise as Soul of an Angel (Atreides)...

Returning to the races off a year layoff, Tapit Trice marked his return in style, rolling home a 5 1/4-length winner over Highland Falls in the GIII Monmouth Stakes.

A beat slow out of post 8, Tapit Trice was fanned four wide heading into the first turn as Counterspy (Gun Runner) went to the front, carving out an opening quarter in :24.14. A three-wide third following a :49.15 half, the grey held a slight advantage over favored Highland Falls, who was pinned along the inside and in need of racing room. Cornering wide on the final turn, Tapit Trice...

Kin's Concerto, whose lone previous victory came via disqualification, made it to the line first for the first time with a stylish victory in the Woodbine Oaks Saturday afternoon. The chestnut filly sat just off the pace while skimming the rail through fractions of :23.78 and :47.96. Behind a wall of horses at the top of the lane, Kin's Concerto angled to the center of the track in upper stretch and closed relentlessly to hit the front in the final strides.

“We just wanted to break in early position,” said Sofia Vives, who partnered Cruden Bay to victory one race earlier in the GII Connaught Cup. “We wound up right on the rail. Perfect trip in the turn, I got to get into a two-path, followed the horse that I thought was going to be a tough one, it opened up all the holes, and we shot right through.

“She's a very, very talented filly, and she's always shined bright in my eyes,” the apprentice rider continued. “It's pretty exciting for this to happen in your lifetime,...

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – When the seventh race at Saratoga Race Course was finished Saturday, Chad Brown, who deflects credit often, did it once more.

The six-time leading trainer at the Spa had just won a $100,000 maiden special weight with the 5-2 favorite, Incentive Pay (Volatile). It was the first juvenile starter of the meet for Brown.

Brown didn't want to pat himself on the back after this one.

He wanted Pete Bradley, a longtime friend and respected bloodstock agent, to take the bows. At the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Brown left after the first two books. Bradley spied some yearlings that Brown might be interested in.

“Chad works the first two books pretty hard, and I have done a lot with him over the years,” said Bradley, who was in Saratoga Saturday to watch Incentive Pay's debut. “He said he could use...

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In The Derby Bar and Grill, nearly 3,000 miles northwest of Saratoga Race Course, breeder-owner John Gunther thoroughly enjoyed Without Caution's (Without Parole {GB}) solid victory Saturday in the first race on the program.

It was still morning, 9:38 a.m. in Surrey, British Columbia, where Gunther watched the $100,000 2-year-old maiden special weight race, when the colt left the gate under Jose Lezcano. Exactly 1:43.88 later, Without Caution reached the wire first to win his debut by 1 3/4 lengths and become his freshman sire's (by Frankel {GB}) first U.S. winner and sixth overall.

“I would say it made my day, big time,” Gunther said in a phone interview.

Gunther joked that it was a bit early to toast the victory in the 1 1/16-mile race on the inner turf course with champagne.

There was reason to celebrate, though. Without...

Even the most reverent of Ryan Moore's legions of fans would have put his task on Tower Of London (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) down as a hopeless one at the top of the straight in Saturday's G2 Curragh Cup, but one of the world's finest demonstrated yet again that he is master of the clock as he delivered the 13-8 second favourite virtually on top of the line. Held up in rear throughout the early stages as the fellow Ballydoyle runner Grosvenor Square (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set off in isolation, the G3 Red Sea Turf Handicap and G2 Dubai Gold Cup still had a yawning gap to make up turning for home with the front-runner killing off all others.

It looked highly unlikely there, but the fractions had been judged to perfection as Ballydoyle's number one mastered his stablemate yards from the finish. At the line, there was an ultimately substantial 1 1/4-length margin between them, a measurement of how much the runner-up was treading water in the closing...
